Tuning Scores and Photography
How does embodied awareness, perception, and desire manifest photographic outcomes?
“Tuning: the activity of bringing one thing into a sensible relationship with another”. - Lisa Nelson
“I am the reference of every photograph, and this is what generates my astonishment in addressing myself to the fundamental question: why is it that I am alive here and now?” (Roland Barthes, Camera Lucida)
In 2017, as part of Ecological Bodies, a week of somatic inquiry founded by Emily Jones and Hannah Krafcik, I developed a workshop combining my interests in dance improvisation and photography.
Working in the backyard environment, we conducted experiments in combining photo making with Lisa Nelson’s Tuning Scores. We tuned our attention to our body, senses, and environment, while allowing the possibility of picture making in the process.
